“Cancer is just a word, like pizza.” That is what Cody tells his overprotective mother to convince her to let him try out for the soccer team. He wants to play more than anything, but after going through treatment to remove a tumour from his leg he’s worried whether he’ll make it. But that’s not all he has to worry about. His dad dealt with his illness by working, and he misses the time they used to spend together; an overbearing team manager sends him to the bench so his son will get all the playing time; and a group of kids make it clear they have no interest in having an “Egg Head” on the team.
Cody is resilient, however; a kid who can handle cancer treatment and then make a competitive soccer team is no quitter. His skills begin to attract the attention of a few of his teammates; and when a new coach arrives on the team, Cody finally gets his chance. But can he overcome injuries and his fear of using his right leg to shoot, the one that had the tumour? It all boils down to one moment, one game; and the team needs him to score.
Striker is a story of courage, loyalty, fear, and teamwork. It’s about a kid who summons the strength to push through the pain, and by doing so helps heal a soccer team, his family, and himself.

ReplyDeleteI'm rating 'Striker a 10/10 because it was a funny, descriptive book. The way the author described Cody's winning goal made me feel like I was on the pitch, watching the game from the side lines. The funny parts I liked were after Cody and his parents had finished their run around the block before Cody's final game and his dad acknowledged the soft grass on his lawn! I think that 'Striker' is a great book for all soccer lover's!

ReplyDeleteStriker was my second favourite Silver Birch so I give it a 9/10. It is funny and captivating. Some of the funny parts that I liked were the Knitting/Book Club that the super-subs have and when Cody and his parents were jogging around the block to warm up Cody's leg. My favourite player, asides from Cody, would be Paulo. I liked him because not only was he a good player but he was also a nice kid. Striker is for anyone who like soccer and humour.
Nox 4C: In my opinion, I would think I should give this book a 9 out of 10 for quite a few reasons. First, I thought that the main character, Cody, had quite a few personality traits that were very deep such as, he was loyal, in my opinion a good friend and very determined to play soccer even if he did have cancer. Second, I thought that his determination was quite interesting because in my opinion he just continued to say after recovering from cancer is that cancer is just a word, like pizza. Third, I found that his skill as a soccer player and his ability to make new friends, such as Paulo who was a good soccer player from Brazil, and in my opinion that really helped him in the book. That is why I think Striker is a good book for anyone who likes soccer!
