The Night Gardener - FICTION

This much-anticipated follow-up to Jonathan Auxier’s exceptional debut, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes, is a Victorian ghost story with shades of Washington Irving and Henry James. More than just a spooky tale, it’s also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling. The Night Gardener follows two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives. With Auxier’s exquisite command of language, The Night Gardener is a mesmerizing read and a classic in the making.

The Night Gardener was my favourite book so I give it 10/10. I really liked the creepy setting and the story behind it. I thought that the description of the Night Gardener with his muddy, thumping feet, scar mouth and pits for eyes was vividly creepy. I found the fact that the Tree could give you anything you truly wanted for your soul was kind of scary because it was almost like the Tree had it's own living spirit that was hungry for vengeance. The part about the Tree and the Night Gardener's history was creepy because it gave me a thought about what the mother might turn into if she kept losing her soul. I think that The Night Gardener is for anybody that wants a chill down their spine.

My rating for The Night Gardener is a 7/10 because the author came with such a good story line, with the magic tree, the old house, Hester Kettle, and Molly and Kip. I did find the book kind of scary, but interesting at the same time. It's a good thing I don't have a gnarly old tree in front of my house because it would give me the creeps. I think that the glowing flowers that Kip saw in the forest would have been really cool to see, and I could imagine a second book after 'The Night Gardener' to keep going. I can also imagine a scary movie for it! I think the author had a good imagination to think up such a good book!
