On a balmy August morning in 1846, a child was born to Ann and Alexander Swan in the couple’s small wood cabin in Millbrook, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. This in itself was not odd, as home was where babies were most often born in the mid-19th century. What was surprising, however, was that Anna Swan weighed an amazing 6 kilograms (13 pounds) – almost twice the size of an average newborn.
Anna Swan grew to an astonishing size – nearly 2.5 metres (almost 8 feet) tall. She was billed as “The Nova Scotia Giant Girl” at P.T. Barnum’s American Museum in New York. But despite her unusual and challenging physical attributes, she rose above adversity and led a life of love, happiness and great accomplishments. This is her remarkable story.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to rate this book a 10/10 because of how interesting it was when I was reading it. I'm deciding to do that because it was really wacky the size Anna was when she was so small. These were some facts that really caught my attention.... The fact that she was taller then her mother when she was six is really, quite amazing. Or the fact that her dad had to keep making her bed longer as she grew. The pictures in the book show how tall a normal person is, and that helps me see why they called Anna a 'giantess'.
I givr this book a 10 out of 10 because of how intresting it was. It made me want to keep reding. I learned so much about Anna and how hard her life must have been because she stood over 8 feet tall which meant that she was also very hevy to. Everyone made fun of her when she was in school. She also and to constantly stand on display for peopl to come look at her and how tall she was. But when she was travelling she found a nother gian and they fell in love. The evenhad a house made just for them whith a table that was bigger on one enad and smaller on the other so they could eat whith their gusts.

ReplyDeleteI give this book a 9/10. I thought it was quite interesting that Martin built a house specifically for them with big door handles and a bed that was 3 meters long!! In my opinion this is a good book and I would recommend it .
Raphaelle5A. I rate this book ton out of ten because it was unique. I loved learning the extraordinary and amazing life of this giant. Anna had many adventures but many ad times to, for example she was very tall and when she went to school she was often teased because of how tall she was. Anna also did some amazing things like going on display and also having a special house made just fore her and her husband that was also a giant. This book allows you to enter the world and life of somebody amazing.

ReplyDeleteI will give the book 8/10. First of all wow she is tall. It was probably very weird for a women at the time to be that tall. I think it should be illegal to have people with different bodies to be shown of. I think they call them freak shows which is terrible. You would have to have some bad luck to be caught in two fires, than have two kids die. One fact I learned was that making 23$ a week was a lot. Now if you made that you could not afford to live.

ReplyDeleteThe Extraordinary Life of Anna Swan is a great book so I give it a 9/10. It was very informative and interesting. Some of the facts that stood out the most to me were that she weighed 6kg when she was born, that she had met the Queen of England ( at the time) and that she had a baby that weighed nearly 11kg and was 76cm long but that sadly died shortly.
